The Tower of Hercules area, the main monument to visit in A Coruña
1. Tower of Hercules, World Heritage Site
The most essential thing to do in A Coruña city is, without a doubt, visit its main icon , the Tower of Hercules . It is one of the places declared World Heritage Sites in Spain and is the oldest lighthouse in the world that has continued to operate since Roman times. It is only the third tallest lighthouse in Spain (55 meters high), but as it is located on top of a hill it will seem like a true giant . The lowest part of the construction (lighter in color) is what remains from the Roman era , the rest of the lighthouse is a neoclassical construction . Not many know, but the lighthouse was one of Picasso's favorite subjects during his childhood spent in the city.

You can visit the interior of the lighthouse and climb the 200 or so steps to the viewpoint at the top . Of course, capacity is limited and you must take your place (paying the entrance fee) at the Visitor Information and Service Center . Inside the lighthouse there is also a museum where you can learn about its myths and legends , its evolution and the archaeological finds that were found in this place. Above all, we liked to take a tour of the lighthouse and admire this piece of history from all angles. We have read somewhere that the Tower of Hercules is twinned with the Statue of Liberty in New York and the truth is that both towers impress simply with their presence.
